Water Matter

Former exhibition

14 September – 21 October 2018

Photo artist Line Bøhmer Løkken inaugurates Lillehammer Art Museum's new project room with the exhibition Water Matter.

One of the biggest challenges of our time is linked to water as a resource: pollution, floods and droughts as a result of changes in the water cycle. Access to clean water is increasingly controlled by capitalist forces and subject to political power struggles. This has been the backdrop for Løkkens pictorial approach to the element water.

Water is everywhere, in us and around us. Water is the basis of our existence and too much, or too little, has major consequences for all living things. So natural, yet so vulnerable; available to some, but not to all. Ownership and access to clean water in one of the biggest challenges of our time. The battle for water is intensifying, and internationally we see a growing tendency towards the privatisation of water.

In contrast, rivers around the world have been given status of a legal entity, with all the associated rights, duties and obligations. These veins of the earth are equated with humans, but how can one ensure that their rights are respected? And how can we increase our awareness of connections and the consequences on water quality, both locally and globally?
